Support for One Nation down across key opinion polls

One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce has brushed off his party’s slip in the polls after months of climbing support briefly put it above Labor.

The primary vote for Pauline Hanson’s right wing party was down across three major polls published on Monday, with Newspoll and the Resolve Political Monitor showing a two-point tumbles to 28 per cent and 25 per cent respectively.

The results tally with DemosAU findings, which showed One Nation plunged four points to 26 per cent since last year quarter.

“I think 28 per cent is not too bad,” Mr Joyce said of the Newspoll.

One Nation’s losses were Labor’s gain, climbing to 29 per cent across both the Newspoll and Resolve surveys with two and one point bumps.

The DemosAU polling put Labor at 27 per cent on the back of another one point gain.

The Coalition also enjoyed one point bumps in both the Newspoll and DemosAU rankings, bringing its primary support to 20 per cent and 22 per cent.

But it fell one point in the Resolve poll to 23 per cent.

The Greens got one point gains to 14 per cent in the Newspoll and 12 per cent in the Resolve poll, and held steady at 13 per cent in the DemosAU poll.

Albanese preferred PM: Newspoll

Anthony Albanese remained Australia’s preferred prime minister at 45 per cent, according to the Newspoll.

The result was down from mid-year but up from September.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson followed at 30 per cent, while Angus Taylor lagged behind at 25 per cent.

When asked about key national concerns, 38 per cent of respondents identified lower government spending as the highest priority for the federal government to deal with inflation and the rising cost of living.

This was a major priority for more than half of Liberal voters, compared with 22 per cent of Greens voters and 21 per cent of Labor voters.

The top priority for Labor and Greens voters was subsidising essentials such as energy and fuel.

The polls come as parliament returns and after Senator Hanson and the Opposition Leader both spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Brisbane over the weekend.

Senator Hanson used her speech to criticise Mr Taylor but also indicated One Nation would work with the Coalition to oust Labor at the next election.

Mr Taylor used his address to point to what he saw as mistakes under the Morrison government, including Covid-era spending, net zero commitments and migration settings.
